While St. Patrick’s Day originated as a quiet religious feast honoring Ireland’s patron saint, the vibrant, parade-filled celebration Americans know today is largely an invention of the United States. Irish and non-Irish love to celebrate. Here in San Diego there is an annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade, bars and restaurants have drink specials and other community outings center around this “lucky” day. Unfortunately, the luck can run out quickly if you’ve had too much alcohol.

Heightened patrols across San Diego County

While shamrocks and celebrations fill the streets this St. Patrick’s Day, law enforcement in San Diego County is sending a clear message: impaired driving won’t be tolerated.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office has announced a significant enforcement initiative for March 17, with specialized impaired driving patrols operating during the peak celebration hours—from 6:00 p.m. through 6:00 a.m. the following morning. Deputies will be strategically positioned throughout the county to identify and remove dangerous drivers from the roads.

The sobering statistics of St. Patrick’s Day

Last year’s St. Patrick’s Day enforcement efforts resulted in 11 arrests for suspected impaired driving in San Diego County alone. These aren’t just numbers—they represent 11 potentially catastrophic situations prevented.

The broader picture is even more concerning. In 2026 thus far, county law enforcement has arrested 1,514 individuals for driving under the influence, with Sheriff’s Office Deputies accounting for 237 of those arrests. These figures underscore an ongoing public safety challenge that extends well beyond holiday celebrations.

Understanding the full scope of impairment

It’s crucial to recognize that impaired driving isn’t limited to alcohol consumption. Deputies will be watching for drivers compromised by:

  • Alcohol
  • Marijuana
  • Prescription medications
  • Illegal drugs
  • Any combination of substances

Even legally prescribed medications can impair your ability to drive safely, putting you and everyone sharing the road at serious risk.

The financial consequences of a DUI in California

Beyond the obvious safety concerns and potential for injury or death, the financial impact of a DUI arrest is staggering. A single impaired driving arrest and conviction can cost upwards of $15,000 when factoring in legal fees, court costs, increased insurance premiums, and other related expenses. That’s a hefty price tag that doesn’t account for the lasting impact on employment, reputation, and personal relationships.

Make the smart choice to avoid bad luck

The solution to avoiding a DUI is simple: plan ahead. Designate a sober driver, use rideshare services, take public transportation or stay where you’re celebrating. Whatever your plans this St. Patrick’s Day, make sure getting home safely is part of them.

What happens if I am charged with a DUI?

If the police stop you and charge you with a DUI, it is crucial to seek legal advice. There are many defenses available. Which one you use depends on the circumstances. Here are a few you might consider:

  • The police tests were wrong: Did you fail a field sobriety test? Bad balance, poor coordination or a disability could explain this. Did you fail a blood alcohol test? Machines can read wrong if not maintained. Prescription medication can also affect results.
  • The police set up their checkpoint wrong: Specific rules govern how police officers set up and run DUI checkpoints.
  • The police got the wrong person: The troopers say they saw a leprechaun in a black car weaving across the road as it passed them a few miles back. You may be driving a black car and dressed as a leprechaun. That does not mean it was you they saw.

You cannot rely on the luck of the Irish to get you off a DUI charge. Create your own luck by talking to an experienced attorney.
